Effects of Hemp based CBD

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD is one of about 80 cannabinoids that are present in Industrial Hemp and Marijuana. CBD is non-psychotropic and does not produce the intoxication or euphoric effects that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) does. Those effects are created by the activation of the CB1 and CB2 receptors by THC. CBD has a very low affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors and therefore produces little to no effect. This makes CBD extract products attractive to those who are interested in the therapeutic properties of marijuana but either don’t like the “high” the THC produces or are tested for THC for their jobs. There have been some professional football players who have started using CBD products because there is some hope that it can help with issues resulting from CTE.  CTE is a serious brain disease that some doctors have linked with the repeated head trauma football players receive over the life of their careers.

CBD should is in the process of intense research. It has not been approved by the FDA as a medical device and should not be marketed as one. If you see someone marketing CBD making any type of medical claims beware. Do you own research and decide for yourself if CBD can benefit you!

CBD LEGAL ISSUES IN SHORT

CBD has been a pretty hot topic in the news for the past year or so. Several States have passed laws specifically passed laws legalizing CBD for certain uses. The legal status of CBD is a topic for another post. The short answer to the question is that generally if the CBD is extracted from Industrial Hemp it should be legal in every state. If extracted from marijuana it would be legal in states where marijuana or CBD laws have been passed decriminalizing them on the state level. Technically, however, marijuana and its direct extracts are still schedule 1 by Federal Law, though there has been some talk about moving marijuana to schedule 2 or decriminalizing it all together. But it doesn’t look like that will happen anytime in the near future. The best news we have is that it appears that Federal Agencies generally aren’t actively enforcing marijuana laws.

CBD OIL EFFECTS

As far as the effects of CBD oil and it’s varied products, most of what we know is very promising anecdotally, so far. (As far as the FDA is concerned). People who are using CBD for varies reasons are seeing great benefits from it, but the several studies that have been done aren’t conclusive enough for the FDA to approve it as a medical device or for the DEA to back off of their attempts to “declassify” CBD from marijuana.

Recently, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH) issued a letter to the Senate Caucus on International Drug Control talking about the potential benefits of Cannabidiol and the current “barriers to research.”  the following is an excerpt from that letter:

In addition to epilepsy, the therapeutic potential of CBD is currently being explored for a number of indications including anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, schizophrenia, cancer, pain, inflammatory diseases and others. My testimony will provide an overview of what the science tells us about the therapeutic potential of CBD and of the ongoing research supported by NIH in this area.

More research needs to be done and as representatives of the people, it should be in the Federal Government’s best interest to make pathways to facilitate the further study and research of CBD (Cannabidiol) and it’s potential benefits.
